So I'm still being horribly indecisive about giving up meat. In practice, I've stopped eating meat (except for fish) as of a week ago. I just seem to be wishy-washy about saying "I don't eat meat". I guess I figure that if I keep talking about it, I'll have investment in not eating meat, and it'll just sorta happen.

Stuff that's okay in my books: fish, eggs, dairy (although as I'm mildly lactose intolerant, I don't eat large amounts of dairy). I'm more torn about keeping the eggs than I am about the fish.

Stuff I expect to miss: souvlaki, ribs, and my favourite spaghetti recipe. And gyoza.

babies *are* made of meat! yay! it's one of their best features, i've found.

i think i've missed why you're doing this; care to 'splain? (no is a perfectly fine answer.)

I've been really interested in changing my eating habits for the last month or so (I don't feel like I eat nutritionally enough). And I've long believed that the way meat is prepared in North America results in meat that isn't terribly healthy-making. And I've always felt weird about statistics that talk about the amount of resources it takes to produce meat compared to other foods.

But I've never really had the commitment to giving meat up.

And then something that [livejournal.com profile] rivka posted in her journal got me thinking about the topic again, and I think trying to give up meat will also help entrench the other food habits I'm trying to establish (eat breakfast! more fruits and vegetables! less processed sugar!)

I know, I know. Errrgh. For me, I don't have a problem with actually eating the meat - it's when I stop to think about where the meat came from. :( Seriously, if I had my own property, I'd raise my own food, and chow down on those chickens without a second thought.

Good for you. You have moral fortitude. And are a smidgen inspirational. ;)

When I was in Haiti, I was present for (and to some extent, involved in) the death of a whole bunch of animals. I felt a whole lot better about those animals and the way they were slaughtered than I feel about food animals in North America.

Wise words my sister. However chickens always freak me out when they're killed (even though I saw my parents do it when I was a kid).

Well, you could always go 90% vegetarian, and still eat meat in things like gyoza where you really think you'd miss it. You're lucky living in Toronto - there are a couple of good, cheap vegan Oriental restaurants about, and probably a fair number of other veggie restaurants. In a lot of North America, it's nightmarish to be veggie - parts of the US are worst.

One of the best Vegetarian restaurants in the city is not too far away from where I work. I love their food.

It's your tongue and stomach... you don't have to justify or rationalize eating or not eating anything.
