I love my Mac; I really do. My cow-orker brought his new MacBook Pro into the office on Wednesday, and I was drooling over it. Last time a cow-orker brought a Mac product into the office, I ended up buying my own.

And, um. I really, really like the MacBook. So I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] the_siobhan and she pointed me toward this Greenpeace campaign to push for a greener Apple. This page showing a comparative ranking of the various electronics manufacturers is also worth linking to.

And it was all a bit sad-making. Yes, I know that other companies have evil-ness in different areas. Yes, I believe that it's next to impossible to make perfect consumer choices (although "buy less" seems like a good general strategy). But I must confess that I'm probably going to put off considering a purchase, at least for a while.

There's certainly nothing altruistic about Apple -- nor any of the other computer companies, for that matter. Environmental efforts are applied only if they benefit the bottom line. I don't have a supporting argument or data, but I suspect the computer companies are on average on par with one another for net environmental goodness and badness.

I've had a few issues with the tactics of Greenpeace and The Sierra Club over the past few decades, but I don't harbor any negative feelings overall towards them. And I have an environmentalist background.

So, take this as the grain of salt that it's worth... A Counter-Opinion (http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/Q4.06/05F99CE1-100E-4463-A73D-09EC8FB97D0E.html) on the whole Apple/Greenpeace thing.
