Canada may be running the Iraq election. The article says that Bush may be announcing this during his visit on November 30th.

No no no no no no.

You'd prefer that the Bush Administration were in charge?

I certainly do. To me, the question is "Why would the US want a hand in the Afghanistan election but not the Iraq election?" And the only answer that I can come up with is that they know that it's going to be a train wreck and want their hands to be clean.

I really wish that we didn't live in a climate where right-wing pundits here wouldn't use your cooperation to simultaneously praise Bush for being multilateral while blaming you for everything that's going to go wrong, but that's where we are.

I understand your concern about Canada getting involved in the elections, but I too have to ask (rhetorically perhaps) 'You'd prefer the us to do it?'. Honestly its not the best thing, and while we did pretty much stand against the war it reinstates us as 'America's little brother' but honestly we still have a good standing in the world and unless something was obviously uncovered that the election was so highly rigged with evidence showing this to be so, its less likely for the world to question the restults as long as the US actually keeps its fingers out of it (kind of unlikely I know). Canada is still accepted as being fair and honest and again if the US keeps its hands out of the matter this would be one way to try and start fixing a really bad situation.

But being involved at all over there is admittedly just asking for trouble.

yes. the US made this mess, the US should bear the responsibility, and the blame, and the guilt. we should all stay clear until they've admitted it because the arrogance and lies must come home to roost -- people elected this administration again; it should hurt so there is some hope they'll learn since they seem immune to learning in other ways. i don't want us to be the US's little brother in this, i don't want us to sully our hands by standing in front of them and covering their ass, i don't want us to taint our good standing in the world by getting involved in something where the US will continue to fuck with things behind our back anyway.

maybe if i held out some hope for the iraq elections to do something positive for iraq, i'd feel differently. but i don't.

What I'd prefer is that US just get out.

I know, there's a loud argument in favour of staying, "to do the job right", but the longer the US stays, the more Iraqis are going to die and the more redical and viscious the eventual winners will be.

The only way the US could "stabilize the situation" would be to send in another a million or so troops (which they don't have) and kill about the same number - or more - Iraqis.

As it stands, the only reasonable thing to do would be to pull out - it would be better for Iraq and it would even be better for the United States, if not necessarily for George W. Bush.

I am just afraid that during the visit Paul Martin will announce plans to send some small symbolic number of soldiers to Iraq.

Canada can at least run an election that isn't a clusterfuck. The LAST thing the Iraqis need is Diebold machines.

It's a scary thought, isn't it? Brave enough to say "No" to the war, but too cowardly to say "No" to picking up the mess (as if we could).

I think it's time to write letters to our MPs.
