I really enjoyed this quotation from a link from [livejournal.com profile] supergee's journal:

Jettas are safe because they make their drivers feel unsafe. S.U.V.s are unsafe because they make their drivers feel safe. That feeling of safety isn't the solution; it's the problem.

I thought that was a useful metaphor for a lot of things.

Is that from the New Yorker article on SUV safety? I thought a lot of what it had to say about attitudes towards safety in driving SUVs was applicable to things like the US's reaction to 9/11, or just about any perceived threat.

I've always felt that way about minivans. They make people feel safer and more protected / invulnerable because they're bigger, but they're designed to drive like cars, and they're often driven by people who have only ever driven cars and have no real "truck" experience. As a result, minivan drivers tend to be crazy, insane, dangerous people.
