I really feel for OWB fans.

Many of them are my daughter's age, which was exactly the right age for the story of an underloved special child. It was new and exciting, and includes the only midnight release for A BOOK that I think I'll ever see. It was also central to the explosion of fan fiction, teaching an entire generation how to communicate through fiction. I get that the story was important and meaningful to many of them.

JKR is awful, toxic, and every goddamn time she opens her Twitter account, there is a world wide retching. Her stories are problematic, and I hear that the newer ones are much more obviously so.

In conclusion, all work should enter the public domain after 20 years. The good parts can be remembered fondly, and the bad parts can be yeeted.

Friends of mine, one of whom is trans and one of whom is non-binary, have a trans son. He is 11. The books and fandom have meant so much to him, since before JKR really started showing her true colors in the open. His mom is heartbroken to have to be explaining "death of the author" to him.

I mean, people have done interesting things with Lovecraft ffs, particularly Black authors. Imagine the reimaginings that people could do with OWB.

Hells yes. And now that you've reminded me of Lovecraft Country, I look forward to "Harry Potter and the Curse of the TERFs"

ETA... That's not at all clear that it's in the horror genre. It's horror.
