My great-aunt passed away today. I heard yesterday that she was ill and in palliative care. She was my grandmother's youngest sister, and that last of my grandmother's siblings (including their spouses).

I can't say that I really knew her. I haven't seen her in probably 35 years, and by all accounts her dementia was pretty bad for a long time. But I track the family genealogy, so I get all the family updates.

My (late) grandfather has a brother (Uncle Jerry), who is now the last of that generation of relatives. He's getting on in years, but seems to be in good health. But when he passes, that generation will be gone.

Condolences. The passing of a generation is a sad and scary thing, even if you weren't close.

It is sad to see those people and stories pass on, even when you aren't close. <3

Yes, it's an odd finality to have a whole generation be gone. It must be lonely if the last one is aware of being the last one.

I have no aunts and uncles left. (Maybe Uncle E's third wife is still alive in TO but I never had much connection with her and it just occurred to me now that she might count). Some of my parents' younger cousins are still alive, though.
