I've been having a good deal of fun with various DVDs looking at some deleted scenes (especially lately, The Craft) and saying to myself "Okay, I understand why they cut this one...."
This is why I collect copies of the original edition of SIASL. Regardless of how you feel about the book, the "de-expurgated" edition is a whole lot worse.
I think that the additional scenes with Sean Bean (Boromir) added a lot of back-story for Faramir's character. But that's about the only addition that I think was worthwhile.
I especially hate the scene in which Fangorn comes to Helm's Deep, 'cause the editing on it is so poor. I'm certain that that scene only exists to molify the Tolkien purists who want things to be just like the books. It's just so badly inserted.

along which lines, i still think that scott's own cut of blade runner is superior to the original theatrical release.
