Why I hate politics: Because I'm sure Paul Martin's side would present the same things in the most benign and positive light possible, and I would look the arguments over, and agree with both sides.

And I'm hardly alone in that respect. The public today is swayed very easily, our opinions not merely shaped, but created and guided by the public media.

I'm concerned about a national leader who does not respect the concept of fair taxation in support of universal social programs. One who does not pay into the tax program in a meaningful way himself, by using shelters not available to most citizens. and practices not usual to say the least.
In as little as four days Mr. Martin has already stated, as the current Prime Minister, that he will freeze all spending, and will review all programs, in an effort to cut spending while at the same time he is reassuring corporate Canada that the promised tax cuts will not be reviewed or frozen, and in fact are assured. Even so, the language that states the reviews and freezing of public service promotions and raises must be done in order to attempt to provide the two billion dollars for health care funds to provinces does not necessarily guarantee that the promised two billion dollars will in fact be turned over to health care, rather it makes the case that an attempt to find the promised money is ongoing.
Another question which has not gotten a quality answer concerns the transfer of ownership of the steamship lines to family members, with the largest amount of owned stock resting in the name of Mr. Martin's wife. Is a wife owning your company instead of oneself considered to be entirely divorcing oneself from a conflict of interest? I'm asking. The new prime minister is now sleeping with the owner in fact, of the steamship line. In the sixties, which was a pretty liberated time, that would have been seen as a conflict.
Another problem I have is the recent news that Sheila Copps may not be acceptable to Mr Martin to run in the next election. I would hope then that Sheila would run for the NDP if she is refused by Mr. Martin. It is extremely rare that a leader would be so singularly spiteful towards an experienced and successful Member of one's own party, a person I might add that has verbally endorsed Mr. Martin at a party convention.
It is almost certain that the only threat to Paul Martin within his own party is that he might choke on his own bile.
I'll be voting NDP.
