When they first started, if you visited the site in Internet Explorer, you got a page that simply said something to the effect of, "Get a real browser." While that's obviously not a direct quote (I can't recall what it did say), I recall that the haughtiness of their wording was not any better than that. But of course, take that with a grain of salt, since I'm going by my perception and memory of it, and it was some time ago. I have a big pet peeve about that kind of attitude, but in addition, I really think that for a platform that's largely intended to supplant Facebook, not supporting Internet Explorer relegated it instantly to "This platform is never going to take off."
I'd guess that that's probably a combination of an overly flippant programmer and a tool that's in alpha. Which isn't intended as an excuse, mind you -- the alienation that stuff like that produces is quite real.
