I certainly don't want to defend Mehserle or say that he got a fair sentence. At the same time, I think it's important to remember that he was the just about first policeman ever to get a sentence in California, and the case was the first murder prosecution of a policeman ever in San Francisco. Perspective.
One of my cow-orkers used to be a crown prosecutor who specifically brought cases against the police (the road from crown prosecutor to programmer is a strange one). He's often said similar things about the Ken Deane trial: there's every reason to be disappointed with the outcome of Deane's trial, but the fact that he actually got convicted was a big deal.
