Cartooning
Apr. 16th, 2010 08:03 amThis is my final cartooning assignment. I'm not thrilled with working in the realm of editorial cartoons. The assignment in this case was to create something that would serve as a magazine cover.
I think that the final execution is okay. This is a photo, rather than a scan, so it all looks a bit murky. I really need to work on line weight: Bechdel talks about some of her ah-ha moments about line weight in The Indelible Alison Bechdel. Tonal balance is another area that I need to work on. If you stand 10 feet away from the piece, it all looks like the same colour intensity.
Without really thinking about it, I reproduced an image of Haiti that I don't like: needy, pathetic, helpless. In my original rough drafts, I didn't have the kid -- just a hand stretching out from under rubble. It bugs me to know how unconsciously I drew upon the standard narrative.
