As the Obama administration looks to improve its relationship with Latin Americans, including re-establishing diplomatic ties with Cuba, Canada's diplomatic efforts must secure our position.
To that end, Canada must offer its assistance in bridging the differences between the United States and Latin American states. Canada's active role in this process would strengthen our privileged diplomatic position in the continent.
At the same time, outstanding questions regarding Canada's role in Haiti need to be answered and our approach re-evaluated if we are to avoid previous mistakes in the region.
For New Democrats, focus on the Americas has to focus on diplomacy, not just on trade. That means engaging our partners in the continent in addressing our shared economic, environmental and social challenges.
