I'm glad you wrote to them.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I have certainly been fascinated by the apparent assumption I've read on a lot of LJ's that Amazon was doing it out of bigotry. It seems just as likely to me that it could have been a programming error.

Even if it was bigotry, everybody has the capacity to open their minds, IMO.

Even if it's a programming error, there's also a bureaucratic error that's prevented people who've been noticing (and reporting) the problem from being able to get the problem noticed and resolved by Amazon. And that's not technical: that's process.

When did it start? I only started reading about it this weekend.

According to the various sources I've found, there's been issues dating back to February.

Thank you for your quick reply!

Not fixing it in two months is inexcusable.

I don't understand why any books, whatever the themes, should be treated like second-class citizens.

At least one person has been complaining about it since last August.

That's a Bedbug Letter. It gives no indication that your complaint was read.

Not even the Twilight series?

(Sorry, I'll be over on the naughty stool.)

You get a better response if you threaten to close your account, but don't actually do it because having one gives you leverage in getting their attention.

How do you close an account with Amazon? Aside from clearing out your cookies?

This Amazon statement (http://blog.seattlepi.com/amazon/archives/166329.asp) seems to be owning up to it as an error (in the "mistake" sense rather than the "bad idea" sense) on their part. I think that if in the long run all this does is make people aware that other book buying options do exist, then that will have been a good result. Of course, if it makes Amazon more aware that their customer base is diverse and active, then that's a big plus too.

seems more likely to be back-pedalling to me.
however, even so, that's a good thing.

You just threaten to, to try and get them to reconsider the filters they tried to put in place.

I think they got the baby with the bathwater on this one.
