There's a chance I'm gonna go to Ottawa this weekend for a Haiti event. What is there in the way of reasonably inexpensive places to stay near the University [Edit: of Ottawa]?

The cheapest place I found was the Econolodge on Rideau St... but despite being a fleatrap, it wasn't terribly cheap - $95/night for a 2-queen room. Might have been inflated pricing due to Obamaweek, though.

In other news, I went looking for your issue of OnSpec but could only find the Fall 2008 one on newsstands. Has the Winter issue not come out yet, or are my newsstands failing me?

I posted very very soon after I got word that the new issues were available. So you might have been a touch too early. It's also true that fewer and fewer places in the city have been carrying it. Bakka, for example, apparently doesn't have OnSpec.

We really, really liked the B&B on Somerset. I can't be certain of the name, but it may be "The Inn on Somerset". [livejournal.com profile] the_nita and others stayed there with J & I for a wedding back several years ago, wonderful gay couple running the place, incredible food. Not *cheap*, as such, but not ruinous either. Now I think about it, Tickly Girl and I have stayed there too.

I also rely on the Inn on Somerset for queer-friendly accomodations, if I'm in Ottawa on business. Lots of antiques, slightly cheaper than a hotel, no TVs in the room, shared bathrooms in some cases (but a robe is provided).

However it is a healthy walk from that Inn on Somerset West to UOttawa on Somerset East. (There is no bridge across the canal at Somerset.) Ottawa winter weather being what it is, you might take the bus (running again now) or find somewhere else to stay.
