Canada stood alone before a United Nations human rights council yesterday, the only one among 47 nations to oppose a motion condemning the Israeli military offensive in Gaza.

Toronto Star

We all remember Harper's praise of Israel's "measured response" against Lebanon in 2006.

It's probably note-worthy that the US is not a member of this particular council, and I suspect we're being the mouth of the US in this instance.

I am in such a state lately that I am started to feel ashamed of my country in more ways than I'd ever imagine.

I can understand the U.S. stance...setting up Israel in 1948 would ensure several decades of lucrative weapons sales (to Israel, and to surrounding Arab states). U.S. neo-cons also forged an alliance with their countries' holy rollers - who were conditioned to see support of Israel as a precondition for the return of their messiah. And then there's the power wielded by AIPAC and other Jewish lobby groups in the U.S., attacking those who fail to display the necessary fealty to Israel, and generously funding those who do.

But I would love know what angle that Canadian politicians are working here. What benefit does kissing Israel's ass have for us, that we're supposed to disregard their criminal treatment of the Palestinians? Are our politicians just ideologically pre-disposed to carrying water for their U.S. masters?

Ironically.... my fundamentalist Xtian relatives "reminded" me a week ago that in Xtian lore all the nations turn against Israel except what appears to be Canada just prior to the battle on the plains of Megiddo.

Not that I buy into it, but it is interesting that for years now fundies have been saying its Canada that stands by Israel in the last days and you just pointed out that was exactly what they were doing. LOL

I suspect that there are folk out there who actively try and make these prophecies happen.

It's based on fundamentalist xtian interpretations of biblical lore. I guess the fundies needed something to replace not having a qabala. LOL

It's all a mess and nothing good will come out of the conflict any time soon. I was watching a news segment about it and an Israeli gunship pilot was saying something like "It's their own fault when they use children as human shields" ! Somehow it just didn't ring true.

Hey, aren't we prorogued and our government isn't supposed to be doing anything right now? How come Parliament is frozen but Harper's minions are still allowed to run around the world displaying how much they suck to the international community?

Parliament is prorogued; the government is not. The government can do anything that doesn't require parliament.

I wonder if the Harper government, if/when they actually are able to form a new government, will be the US's mouthpiece if the Obama Administration diverges from current US policy on Israel, as seems possible. Granted, they probably won't diverge as much as you or I may like, but the incoming administration seems very likely to strong-arm the parties into negotiations, especially based on the things Secretary-Designate Clinton said at her confirmation hearing yesterday. They certainly won't tacitly approve bombing civilians and feign concern like the current administration is doing.
