If your India Ink becomes almost-but-not-quite solid, is there a way to save it?

No. Water will thin it and make partially india ink. Seriously.

Right. If it's the usual drawing formula, it's turned into black shellac in the jar, and if you get anything to dissolve with water, it'll be just unbound carbon in water. Not pretty, and probably won't even stay stuck to paper later. (IIRC, the solvent in the stuff that keeps it liquid is ethylene glycol. It's far simpler to just buy a new jar if you want the ink. If you're trying to save a gunked pen, Koh-i-Noor Rapidoeze will help. Check art supply stores.)

Can it be gently heated somehow to re-liquify it? Say, over a candle?
