I heard on the radio the other day that only 51% of Torontonians say that their first language is English. This down from 54% a few years ago. That's neat, in that whole "patchwork quilt"-kinda way.

Canadians refer to themselves as a patchwork quilt in much the same way Americans refer to themselves as a melting pot.

I had read a few years back that the U.N. conducted a study on multiculturalism and voted Toronto the most multicultural city in the world. I don't have a solid reference for this (never really looked for one), but I refer to it as a point of pride about the city often.

So long as it's not that 48 of the other 49% is Québécois (did I get that right?), then it counts as patchwork. Otherwise, it's just a houndstooth.
