bcholmes: (politics and strange bedfellows)

I've seen a few people post about this. I went to one of the Toronto Stop the SPP organizational meetings, but knew that I wasn't going to be able to take the buses to Montebello (I was just back from Haiti at the time). Sadly, I think only one person on my friends list posted about actually going.

Apparently, some of the "protesters intent on violence" are strongly suspected of being undercover cops, and there's some good video footage and conversation around the topic. I especially like this picture that shows the police wear the same shoes as the violent protesters.

Also: a CBC news story. And the cops deny it.

5 reasons to oppose the SPP.

The NYC Police had people flying to *Europe* to "study violent protesters". They then claimed it was a security matter that they had the right to keep the public form seeing the budget that funded this.

The idea that a local police force gets to have an autonomous secret international spy wing would be farcical, if it weren't so dangerous.

No shock there. The FBI has been infiltrating protest groups in the US as far back as Vietnam. I'm sure that the government probably had agitators in the Socialist/Labour movement in the late 19th/early 20th century, as well. Having violent protestors gives the cops an excuse to bust heads and clamp down on dissent. If the dissidents won't give them the violence that they need, they'll insert someone into the group who will agitate for it. Whenever we in the College Democrats would go to an event during the 1992 presidential race it was made very clear that, first and foremost, we weren't to be violent. Don't give the Secret Service an excuse when the president or vice-president is in town. Just be respectful in your dissent.

I've heard it said that 9/10ths of the people in any protest group that advocate violent tactics are usually cops, and that they don't even know that the others are cops, since you've probably got one from the local police, one from the FBI, and so on.
