Okay.

I've pretty much stopped using Frankentiva, because every time Ldot loaded new software on it, she broke something. The latest adventure involved nuking IP on it. Anything involving IP throws nasty abend problems. Fortunately, I moved all my files to the laptop several months ago.

Siobhan has managed to nuke her machine. Somehow. We're not sure how. Perhaps it's just a bad power supply. She's been computerless for about a week.

She's borrowed my laptop a coupl'a times, but I've got all these nervous, antsy feelings about people using my laptop. So I pointed her at the dual boot machine that we largely use as a server. Within an hour, Windows was somehow trashed on that machine. Wouldn't boot to Windows. At all. Blank screen. I tried to use the Aptiva recovery process, and now it won't even boot properly to Linux.

That's three machines in the office essentially out of commission.

Minutes ago, I come back to my desk to find that Siobhan's been using my laptop again. She's left open some browser window that's hung and won't shutdown. I only seemed to be able to recover using the BRS solution.

And yet, the feelings of impending dread continue...

the machines know their mistress. None other should touch them.

For your information my computer is now working perfectly. Following some er, invasive proceedures.

Surgery on the Frankentiva to begin shortly.

Lending Tools

Tools never come back in as good a shape as they were when you loaned them. Or when you return them, either.

Everyone has choice. You can choose to "Neither a borrower nor a lender be"; and if you chooses otherwise, then "Expect the worst" will soften the unpleasantness of the surprise when you get it back in poor shape; or maybe make you reconsider lending it in the first place. My love of my friends is stronger than how they can mistreat my stuff, like yours is. And sometimes I learn to not lend them certain things; but I love them just the same.

A little cynical, yes. A whole lot realistic, very.
