Dear Bush and company,

Have a look at this:

The teenage pregnancy rate in Canada has hit an all-time low and the teen abortion rate has fallen to its lowest level in more than a decade, according to a new report.

The number of unwanted pregnancies among adolescents and young adults has fallen principally because they are using birth control, said Alex McKay, research co-ordinator at the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada, and author of the study.

"It's due to greater contraceptive use, not teens having less sex," he said.

Just sayin'.

(The article does go on to say that we're not doing as good a job as we should regarding STD education, though).

The Guttmacher Institute has had statistics proving this causal relationship worldwide for *decades*. American conservatives refuse to lsiten.

Republicans (other than possibly one or two coastal state ones) juat don't care, and deliberatley ignore the truth when they can, and lie when they can't to promote a religious agenda of denying *anyone* contraception if they can mananage it.

There is no way in hell Republicans will ever notice this, or even care.

Have fun convincing the rabid fundies that teaching kids that "sex is dirty and bad" is only encouraging unprotected sex, pregnancy, and so on; however. You could have all the studies in the world, and they'd still come back at you with "the only 100% method of birth control is abstinence, so that is what we should be teaching!"

I remember STD education in my school years. It was fine, but I think it's hard for a 12 year old to take chlamydia as a serious possibility in their sexual life. No matter what, it just doesn't seem like it can happen to you.

I wonder if that statistic will improve once the HPV vaccine really kicks in. Not that I think we need more vaccines or anything, but it will be interesting.

Hello BC :)
