I've been thinking a bit more about the blog, "Girls Read Comics (And They're Pissed)". In particular, I was pondering this post about some lame-ass thing Bill Willingham said:

This is the one panel at which the dream of every female reader of FABLES has come true. Each and every one of them must be made to cry or squeal or swoon like a character in a Jane Austen novel.

And Alias Karen notes:

In the course of Austen’s canon, only two characters of note faint and they are Harriet Smith (Emma) and Marianne Dashwood (Sense and Sensibility). Harriet faints when attacked by gypsies. Marianne faints after days of not eating and sleeping. Nobody swoons for joy.

So. Um. Maybe Willingham was suggesting that every female reader of Fables should be attacked by gypsies, or prevented from eating and sleeping. Which, um, is less appealing-sounding when you put it that way.

And the only squealer I can think of (Lydia, P&P) suggests to me that Austen doesn't approve of squealing.

Some times people really don't get it. I'm not sure what he was thinking but he thought it made sense at the time. It goes to show that maybe he should go and read some Jane Austen.
