I have the soundtrack for Serenity. I love the title piece, "Serenity". It's the piece of music that plays just after we've seen The Operative's introduction. We've cut to space, seeing the ship for the first time, and then suddenly the ship hits atmosphere. The music starts out slow and sad. A cello, I think. Barely perceptible, in the background are a bunch of violins, building up sound. The violins grow louder and louder until we hit about the middle mark, at which point a banjo replaces the cello, and it's all strummy and fun and adventure-y. And the brasses suddenly appear, and sound all heroic. Then it has a weak ending, but the rest of it is very beautiful.

I barely know what I'm talking about when I talk about music, so I may have all those instruments wrong.

Like the show, the soundtrack grows on ya. The themes you're describing are carried on throughout the films. I sense there is also a target audience. Yet, the music itself stands alone.

I haven't...

...watched the film enough to notice that bit of music. I rather loved the theme song to Fireefly however.
