I was talking to my grandmother today; we chatted briefly about family members, and I suddenly realized something I'd never known before. Apparently my uncle Joe -- my mother's older brother -- turned 60 a few weeks ago. I'm turning 40 in a week and a half. So I was all, like, "Isn't my mother 60 this year?" I'd always believed that my mother was 20 years old when I was born. Talking this through with my grandmother, I learned that I was off by a coupl'a years. She was 18. She was probably 17 when I was conceived.

My parents were very secretive about everything relating to their marriage and my birth (it took me, honestly, 18 years before I knew that they were married two and a half months before I was born).

My best friend when I was a kid insisted that her parents didn't celebrate a wedding anniversary. Since my family was all about celebrations, and I'd remembered celebrating Mum&Dad's (n+1) anniversary as long as I remembered having Nth birthday's myself, I couldn't understand this. Eventually she discovered that her parents had actually not married until after their first or second child was born.

You beat me, I was 30 before my parents admitted it.

The cat's out of the bag now though. Everybody is applying for their Irish passports so we have a copy of their marriage certificate.

My parents are really secretive about a lot of aspects of their relationship. Once in a while something slips. I find it highly intriguing. I found out over the weekend that my Dad apparently knows how to play the bongos quite well. He refused to demonstrate and used the "this discussion should not go further" tone. This is so out of character for him that I have to admit that it's quite the juicy morsel.

Since I'll be out of the country

and probably not near LJ, I wanted to wish you a happy birthday now :)

40's just like 30, only with a few more gray hairs and at least as many questions.

Right?

Please tell me it's true.

My parents were high school sweeties, and that part they are/were secretive about!
