I'm gonna go with "no". I think the main character is alluded to having super duper magical powers, but doesn't exist solely to aid some other white characters. It's her story
On the other hand, while the character of Sistagod gets narrative focalization in the film, she spends most of the time telling us about the other characters, and has no clearly defined character herself. I think I chalk that up to poor writing more than anything else.
SISTAGOD WAS THE MOST MYSTICALLY BRILLIANT FILM I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. YOU LOT MISSED THE POINT. MAYBE A LITTLE MORE DEVELOPMENT NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE BEFORE U GET IT. YOU PROBABLY NEVER WILL. HISTORY WILL WILL ABSOLVE THE FILM WHILE YOU WILL NOT EVEN BE FOOTNOTES.
Again, BC Holmes is imposing her cultural values & expectations on this film. The comment about appreciating Sembene, smacks of "some of my best friends are black" and doesn't negate her bias. Since when did film art have to conform to a given speed. This is being forced perhaps from a Western Industial perspective that has fast-fooded everything - it's like a kid getting impatient with their grandparent when they speak slowly. I saw the film in Toronto, and it was a tremendous work of art. I am incidentally a Jewish-Canadian male with thirty years of film scholarship behind me. That which we don't understand we must not seek to destroy(with the damaging comments). This was/is the basis of slavery, totalitarianism & fundamentalism. I know because I lost most of my creed to this in five short years(1939-1945).
I've been tempted to delete this comment because, really, my tolerance for anonymous comments in this thread is at an end. But I think you raise some valid points that are worth preserving.
Although it might not seem so, I am open to changing my opinion about the film, but at this point, I'm gonna need to hear some one explain to me why they think the film works. If you have "thirty years of film scholarship" behind you, perhaps you can discuss what you think works in the film. Because, frankly, I'm not seeing it.
