I'm looking for a file/database/XML document/whatever that lists English words and their correlates them with their root word. Something that would tell me that "held/hold/holding/etc." are all forms of "hold" I'm hoping that the datasource in question:

  • Is available under an open source or similar license
  • Is machine readable/parsable
  • Is fairly complete

Anyone familiar with such a creature? I've found several spelling trie databases, but haven't found a root words database.

Don't know off the top of my head -- and would be interested in the answer if it doesn't get posted here -- but I'm guessing that you'll already have also asked this on the lucene mailing list, and someone there will probably have an answer.
