There's a provincial by-election in my former riding (Parkdale/High Park). Votes are cast today. Gerard Kennedy, former minister of education resigned his seat to run for leadership of the federal Liberals. The race is primarily between NDP Cheri DiNovo and Liberal Silvia Watson. In general, I'd say that people in Toronto are kind of "meh" about the Ontario Liberals, and in the last federal election, that riding ousted Liberal Sam Bulte (in favour of NDP Peggy Nash).

Things got a bit nasty the other day, which suggests to me that Watson isn't polling the way she wants to poll. I think we could use more NDP in the Legislature.

Aha... this is finally all making sense to me.

I feel a connection to this riding because I tutored at one of the primary schools last year, and my own education classes are there this year. I knew the name Cheri DiNovo was familiar with I saw it on the election signs, but I didn't connect where it was from until you mentioned her... my choir director is a big fan of hers and I think a member of her church. Once a subset of the choir went down and sang Christmas carols there, and stayed for lunch in the soup kitchen in the basement.

She also performed the wedding ceremony at the 2003 Worldcon, which is how I know her.

"In the United Church, we start the service by saying, 'may God be with you,' and the congregation replies, 'and also with you'. But for this ceremony, I think it would be more appropriate to say, 'May the Force be with you.'"

And the congregation responded, "And also with you." *grin*
