One of the things I remember most fondly from my days in the FASS Theatre Company was being able to support the scholarship that FASS had established. FASS was a non-profit theatre group, and would take any profit it might have acquired from the latest year's show and directed it toward a University of Waterloo scholarship that it had established in the name of a member who'd passed away.

I've found myself wondering how one goes about setting up a scholarship; anyone ever done that?

The university office that collects donations and makes them available for scholarships is big business sort of like a Trust Company. They take some money off the top of the donation to administer the thing. And around here there's a minimum you can donate to make an endowment that will pay for their expenses plus make enough money to give a prize every year. It is kind of neat to read the list in the calendar with all the odd criteria for small prizes (such as "Excellence in design as shown in the second-year course" or "A student from Bruce County who is studying architecture"). The scholarships office also has lawyers etc on call to make rulings about how they can re-interpret old gift instructions in order to make the money useful for current needs and/or not be racist, sexist, etc.

Sometimes I speculate that if I had some money of my own or friends' to create a scholarship, I might actually see if it would be cheaper or more flexible to create one for a high school.

But the donations office is definitely very receptive to people who make vague inquiries about giving money ...

You know, my father set up some scholarships a while back.
I'll ask him when I talk to him this week.

You should set one up for young trannies who can't afford their transitions and need help. :) :)
