Yesterday, Erich Gamma and John Wiegand gave a great keynote about the collaborative development process they use to build Eclipse. It was a good talk, and they had some really neat tools to help enable that. But before we got to hear them speak, we had to sit through IBM inspirational commercials.

The first one was done to the tune of The Kink's "I'm not like Everybody Else". As the lyrics start, we see an elevator full of corporate types lip synching to the lyrics. We pan through lots of scenes of more corporate droids. They tell us by lip-synching that they're not like everybody else either. In unison, and in perfect time with the music. All these corporoids. Not like everybody else.

I think IBM doesn't get irony.

The one or two times I've seen that commercial on TV, I've thought that they were being intentionally ironic. But maybe they weren't. If not, they're really dense. And the ad agency's presentation went right over their heads. Which considering the average US corporate board, is entirely possible.
