Is it that the people in Nepal care more about democracy? Or just that they're not distracted by reality TV?

I vote for C): they're sick and tired of the pseudo-Maoist insurgency that's crippled the country, as well as the government's hapless reaction to it. It's bad enough that it's having a serious economic impact, and that will always be the one thing that actually gets people off their asses and into the streets.

Even in our poorest economic moments, we've been far too fat and happy to revolt on that scale. We won't see major street riots and a displaced government until the complete breakdown of our transportation and economic infrastructure due to dwindling oil supplies in about 75-100 years' time.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that they haven't laboured under the delusion of living in a "democracy" for 200 years, either. The reason people in the US don't get indignant is that they believe that this is a "democracy", and either they're happy with the people who got elected, or they think "we'll get them next time". Especially since the middle-class have been taught that protest gets you arrested, which gets you a criminal record, which makes it difficult to get employed. It's easier to sit back and just take it when you've been taught that your livelihood and standard-of-living will be trashed if you do stand up. The American public are a bunch of whipped dogs, beaten into submission by their corporate masters.
