I'm a mature, politically aware lesbian! I know that fat is a feminist issue! I understand how women have impossible standards of appearance shoved down our throats! And I love my body the way it is... until I have to buy a goddamn bathing suit!

-- Dykes to Watch Out For

I usually don't have much to say on the topic of fat activism. Truth is, a large percentage of the people on my friends list are very knowledgeable and articulate speakers about fat issues in our culture in ways that I am not. And chances are, if you've already in that category, you've probably already seen this link about weight loss dieting; I found it on Body Impolitic. But if you're not in that category, I highly recommend the article.

It was interesting, but I didn't like how exercise wasn't mentioned till the very end, in summation of the points. The way it was worded made it sound like obese can be healthy though, which concerns me. I'm technically obese, and I know my body isn't healthy, so people who are larger than me thinking, oh, it's okay, this is healthy and a flight of stairs winds them just as much as it does me... I dunno.

When I look, for example, at the Big Folks Health FAQ, it says that it's hard to adequately guage the health impact of being fat versus being thin.

Even if being fat is unhealthy, research seems to suggest that the typical actions one performs in an effort to lose weight are, themselves, unhealthy.

People constantly hear the message "fat is unhealthy". Constantly constantly constantly. (And, as I said, I don't think that's a well-supported assertion) People don't hear (and probabaly should) that weight loss dieting is unhealthy.

Wow. Thanks for the link - I have to shamefully admit to being one of the small percentage of people (perhaps the only one?) on your friends list who obsesses about their weight. This is excellent food for thought for me.
