As greenhouse gas emission levels in Canada climb, Environment Minister Rona Ambrose says it's time for the federal government to scrap its Kyoto plan and think about something new.

Well that didn't take long.

>The United States, which reneged on the original Kyoto deal, actually has a better track record cutting greenhouse gases than does Canada, Ms. Ambrose said.

Lies, damn lies and statistics. When you're churning out more greenhouse gasses than anyone else it's easier to make even a small dent in them. Nice to see it isn't only the US and UK that has a monopoly on obscuring the truth.

Actually, what this means is that Canada really sucks because the Liberals haven't had the guts to deal with the Nanticoke coal power station.

The funny thing is that the US actually has made a lot of progress and it would hardly cost them much at all to sign the Kyoto treaty; they just aren't signing it for ideological reasons. Back in 1999-2000, business thought it would cost too much, and that's when Dubya's platform was set in stone. Meanwhile, business has discovered that reducing energy cost makes more profit. Reality moves a lot faster than rhetoric these days.

The Conservatives seem to be assuming they don't have to worry about a motion of non-confidence. They are up in the pools. Given the reasons people voted Conservative, it seems like an interesting gamble.
