eh, yes and no. (i am speaking, here, in my great and learned experience as the kid of a marketing professor. ;) there are things to be said here, but and it's a biggie; was this analysis done before or after the election? because if it was done after, then helloooo 20/20 hindsight.

Yes. If Kerry won, then his flag conveys traditional values but Bush's indicates that his vision is limited to 20 states. And the bottom line of Kerry's sticker proclaims a bold objective, where Bush's URL is elitist and the wide spacing and lowercase letters seems aloof and separated from day-to-day decision making. (Did he hire a graphic designer and then ignore their intelligence?)

I dunno...it *sounds* like someone seeing what they want to see.

On the one hand, nods to the previous two comments. On the other hand, I will say that the BUSH/CHENEY logo had always seemed a lot more striking and noticable/memorable to me.

It's pretty much spot-on, from a design analysis. It should have also gotten into the colour choices on those, with the Bush/Cheney opting for a brighter blue than Kerry/Edwards. Simply added to the "excitement" of the overall product.

No question that the Bush team has typically been better at their use of design, and that's a good example. That said, I'm not sure how much that affected the outcome of an election.

Cheers,
Gwen Smith

"Loose letter spacing between the [K] and the [e]"? Uhm. Their bases are practically touching. I cannot think of a common font where that space would not exist (while using Word Case).

And I am not sure why a pictorially inaccurate flag would convey patriotism. But, eh, it's hard to tell. You say tomato, I say tomato.

except that that's what makes a graphic designer know their craft. Hand kerning takes some skill and time; you don't just accept what works in a word document.

This took me about 10m. it is NOT what I'd do for a client; I'd spend a lot more time on it, and I wouldn't follow the basic layout as shown.

The text is brought together, in order to reduce the dead air blank space, and to emphasize the K, which is a very strong letter. The flag is brought in, to create the effect of a / between the names, and to parallel the slope of the y, allowing for less dead space, again. The flag also gets used to wave above the Ds in Edwards, softening the look slightly while integrating the flag more with the two names. The slogan is taken to the side, and the bars of lighter blue are added to bring emphasis as well as make it a more interesting design over the monochrome.

It took me longer to explain this in text just now than it did to create the thing. Designers just *know* this sort of thing. It comes naturally; you do these things without thinking of them, then after you realize 'of course. I did it because...'. Whoever did the Kerry sticker wasn't a designer, and didn't seem to realize that you needed a designer's hand in there.

(I would, btw, put the URL in the empty spot under Edwards if using this)

Nicely done. I would not have thought of moving the initial letter down in order to fill the space; it just goes against my programmer-mentality.

I am still not convinced that an empty area is "dead air" that must be expunged. But there is a reason I did not go into this sort of design field: my intuition does not seem to match up with the general psyche in many places. It is something I would love to be able to do, but...

And thanks for using a real flag, with the right number of stars and stripes. That puts your work a world (err, country) above the original two.
