I'm a bit worried about Serenity: according to Tribute.ca and Movietickets.com, it only raked in USD 10.1 million last weekend. I've heard that 80 million is the happy-making number.

Except it was second and the top movie only made $15 mil.

Depends on whether they leave it out for awhile.

I've heard that the 80 million target is for international sales. The article in tribute didn't say if the sales figures are just for the USA, but for sure they didn't include non-North American sales. (I know it opens next weekend in the UK.)

It may end up being a creeper. Everybody is raving about it, so it may pick up a lot of word-of-mouth sales.

It wasn't a good weekend for money take for any film; Serenity was #2, Flight Plan (I think) was #1 with $15 million.

Hmm, after just seeing the movie, I don't think it would've been all that awe-inspiring for somebody who didn't already know the characters. It's just hard to cram enough of what made Firefly special into two hours.

I'm worried too.

We did our part

But we waited 'til Monday and got in cheap. The theatre was nearly empty.

Well...

...if it bombs, that would match the TV series. Not because it's bad, but quite the opposite, because it's good! Mind you, I haven't seen it yet, so maybe I should reserve judgement until I do.

I'm worried, too (the theatre was nowhere near full when we went!), but it did open 2nd. And people who haven't watched the series are raving about the movie. So I'm hopeful at the same time.

it's ok

Yeah, they couldn't have been expecting $80 in US box office alone. Not with the way that theatres have been empty in the US this year. The one story I've read had the studio spokesdroid saying they were expecting $10M US in the first weekend, and that the word-of-mouth would push it along.

Oh, and another thing...it only opened on about 2,500 screens. Most films open on 4,000 to 5,000 screens. Appearantly many cineplexes only showed it on one or two screens, and in smaller auditoriums, so that was self-limiting as far as how much could be brought in. And most of the people I know who have seen it said that the room was packed. We shall see what happens, because I loved "Firefly", and I'm hoping "Serenity" meets or exceeds box-office expectations.
