i've never read the da vinci code, though i did just see national treasure. having not read it, my uninformed impression has been that it was a less intelligent retread of foucault's pendulum. is this at all accurate?
Hmmm... I think of it as a fictionalized version of Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. I suppose there are similarities to Eco, but even Foucault's Pendulum had some pretty awful bits. The whole chapter on the history of the Rosicrusians, for example.
If you liked The Da Vinci Code, I highly highly recommend his previous book, Angels and Demons. It's much better, in my opinion. More secret society/Vatican conspiracy...good stuffs...
Hmmm... I finished it fairly quickly, so that usually means that I found it enjoyable enough to keep reading, and that I failed to be distracted while reading it. Brown has a fairly easy style, and managed to communicate a lot.
It's also a topic I'm fond of. Conspiracy nut, me.
But. I felt like Brown was working way too hard to throw surprise twists at me (and they weren't really all that surprising). Some things were pretty darn obvious way too early in the game. And I also kept thinking about the movie that they're making, and was aware through the whole book that I'd stop and think: "they're going to have to change this part for the big screen. This scene can't work visually."
