When faced with a ill wife, American conservative politicians just divorce them and shack up with a young secretary (sometimes shacking up with the secretary before the divorce, even). Mr. Broadbent is far more admirable in his actions. And it sounds like the working atmosphere in Ottawa has deteriorated as it has in the US. I wonder how much of the atmosphere in Ottawa is due to the same sort of forces present in Washington; the conservatives are controlled by religious interests who refuse to compromise on anything, because they see compromise as weakness, lack of faith, etc. I know a person who works on the staff of one of the Senators in Washington, and she says that the Republicans have engineered a situation with lobbyists were they can't hire former staffers from Democrats' offices and they've worked to make the Democrat representatives irrelevant to the legislative process. If that is the direction that the Conservatives will be going in Canada, should they gain power, I fear for the future of Canada.
