I found this in the Edmonton Journal:

Liberal is a four-letter word in many parts of Alberta. Even if [provincial Liberal leader] Taft found a cure for mad cow disease and kept a horse at the legislature, rural folks would keep confusing his Alberta Liberal party with the hated-for-generations federal Liberal party. Some Albertans would rather cut off their hand than use it to mark an X next to the L-word on a ballot. Liberals could call themselves the Gay Gun Control Party and get more votes.
