So CNN has called Colorado's Amendment 36 defeated. Amendment 36 would split Colorado's 9 electoral votes as is done in Maine and Nebraska. Why the hell would someone be against this if they believed in, say, democracy?
First off, to be pedantic, it wouldn't split it as it's done in Maine and Nebraska. Even though those states have the opportunity to split their electoral representations in theory, it's never happened and are unlikely to do so tonight. Colorado, by contrast, would always be splitting their representation.
The pro-36 campaign is basically saying that no presidential candidate will ever give love to Colorado as long as they are felt to be a 55-45 lock for the Republicans. That's been true for the past few times, but I think it's just as suspicious to think that they're going to get mobbed over one vote at a time.
I'm apathetic on the issue. Actually, the Maine/Nebraska model seems very attractive to me, but only really if you got every state to simultaneously adopt it. Otherwise, the states that don't are such jackpots that candidates would still be spending all their time in Ohio, Michigan, and Florida.
One thing I've heard as to why states don't do proportional electoral voting is because states with few electoral votes would get ignored all together. I'm from Indiana, so we're ignored anyways - but Iowa and New Hampshire would risk getting any attention.
I'm not sure if that's how I feel about it - just passing along the theory.
