More and more, in the last few days, I'm hearing my friends say the same thing that I've thought for some time: that the real liability for the Liberals is Paul Martin.

This article talks about how the Liberal campaign might have been different if Chrétien were still the leader.

If the Conservatives do win, do you think Martin will resign?

I suspect not. If nothing else, listening to CBC this morning, discussing his very early political life, I doubt he'll give in that quickly. Apparently one of his first political forays was trying to help his father win the Liberal leadership convention in the late 1960's. He was the front runner. He was supposed to be crowned. He was beaten by Pierre Trudeau.

I don't think Martin wants to beat Stephen Harper, so much as he wanted to beat Chretien (and thereby beat Trudeau for his father).

At the very least, I'd expect loud cries for him to... and is there a mechanism by which he can be forcibly pushed out?

The thing is, if the Conservatives win, it will likely be a minorty government. Then it will probably fail, as I can't see any of the other parties supporting them. The Liberals will be way better off at that point with an established name, ready to run in the follof-up election.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, and that article, about Martin.

It seems like he dedicated himself so much to internal Liberal politics to become P.M. that he forgot how to handle public politics.

I'd say his survival, if/when he loses depends on how aggressively and effectively Chretiens successor (whoever that may be) attacks him.
If whoever it is, is even half decent, Martin will be out on his ear in no time.

After all, just look at the speed he's pissing away a huge majority.
