Requiem for Google+

So Google+ is about the kick the bucket. I never loved Google+ (I remember the days of the bad press that the “real names” policy generated), but I hate hate hate Facebook, and it was the most successful competitor to Facebook. I’d actually been using it a lot more, recently, as there are a non-trivial number of art- and RPG-related communities on Google+, and I’m sad to lose those.

Chatter on one group suggests that some folks are headed to MeWe — yet another social media site that no one I know uses. But I’ve signed up to see if it turns in to anything. At least they have a mobile app.

Some folks are moving to pluspora. I signed up there. I'm thinking of signing up for MeWe as well.

I have sampled Mastodon. My sense of it is that it's much more a Twitter-style platform and doesn't have quite the same kind of support for communities. But that's based on about a day's worth of playing from eight or so months ago (or maybe longer).

I hadn't heard of pluspora. What's your opinion of it?

It's a diaspora node admined by gplussers. pluspora.com It has a few quirks but I like it. There's a lot of gplus refuges there so I've been able to connect to a community. You do have to spend time turning off notifications though. And there's no editing posts. Overall, though, it seems pretty decent.

I created a MeWe account but on first flush, doubt I'll spend much time there. I looked around and some of the open communities. I'll have to poke around on gplus and see if I can figure out where everyone went.

I only use it for work, and we're keeping it for now. DW and Tumblr are the only social media sites I like, but they're only good because they're both so clunky and suboptimal.

Oh, that is disappointing to hear.

And, yeah, Dreamwidth has two strikes against it:

1) no mobile app

2) poor ability to deal with non-text posts.
