Though lovers be lost love shall not
Oct. 11th, 2003 11:47 pmI was silent, attentive, I made a conscious effort to smile, nod, stand, and perform the millions of gestures that constitute life on earth. I studied these gestures until they became reflexes again. But I was haunted by the idea that I remembered her wrong, and somehow I was wrong about everything.
I just watched Soderbergh's Solaris with George Clooney. I really enjoyed its quiet, langorous, almost plodding quality. I would love to know what my friend Chris thinks of it as he's always been much more interested in how a movie looks and feels rather than the story that it tells.
As more and more films are becoming more frenetic in their use of quick cuts and speed and motion, this film amazed me with its interest in communicating an idea without any words whatsoever.
I have the Tarkovsky version on videotape around here somewhere, but I've not had the same feelings for it. I'm not a fan of everthing that Soderbergh has done, but Sex, Lies and Videotape remains one of my favourite films.
