It comes bundled free with a lot of things, such that in many cases where you never know (and never have to know) what database you're installing, you're installing MySQL? There are a lot of good books out there about developing against MySQL, so people might have wound up with it more as a side effect of their selection of book than their selection of database? It's the database that most ISPs and hosting companies have available for their clients to use by default? It has an approachable name? I mean, this is probably one of those, "There are more as many reasons as there are projects that use it."

I use it for the small portion of our company's external website that uses a database. In my case, I chose it mostly because of a combination of the "I found a good book that happened to use it" and "the company that hosts our website had it available for me to use". It took something like a day to write the portion of the site that I needed, it was pretty easy, and it's worked well for us for a pile of years now. *shrug*

Wow, there's no "edit comment" option on DreamWidth?

Anyway, in the last paragraph, I should have added the "...and it was free," to my list of reasons.
