bcholmes: lifeclocks are a lie! Carousel is a lie! There is no renewal! (old)

Y'know, I know that all of the episodes of Mad Men have taken place before I was born. And most of the time, I find myself watching with a sort of horrified fascination where I'm nonetheless comforted by how remote and distant from my life it all is.

But then, they'll pull out some gizmo and I'll be, like, "Oh. My. God. There was one of those in the house I grew up in."

Like, in an episode I was watching tonight, Betty went to look up an address in her address book, and the address book was this little box-thingie, with a slider on the side so you can open it directly in the "R" section, and then the top springs open. Holy crap!

I was born in 1959. Watching that show is like a time machine. I end up screaming at the characters -- and their behavior and attitudes are whitewashed from how bad I remember it being.
