I really don't know anything about Zimbabwe (except that The Interpreter is inspired by Mugabe). But the rhetoric sounds so much like the anti-Aristide rhetoric, I'm finding it hard to take the reports at face value.

Oh, it is not just the recent stuff. Mugabe has form - two decades ago he massacred tribal/political opponents in Matabeleland only then he was Mr. Shiny Liberation movement so no-one said anything. Then he started to get nutsier and nutsier and started advocating a huge purge of LGBT people - again, nobody much cared. Then he went after white farmers - which might have had some justice except his people killed African farm workers who did not want to be moved off the land, and a lot of the land was given either to cronies or to people shoveled out of shanty towns with no particular idea what to do next. All of these stories ran for ages and it took a while before anyone much condemned him for it.

Sometimes people that the system hates really are bad people.

The problem is that the Mugabe's are par for the coarse in many African nations. The common folk traded white masters for non-white masters but not much really changes for them.

Very sad. There may be some truth to what Mugabe says about Western Media, but it does seem that he is a scoundrel either way.
