AT last, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is leaving Ogoniland, Rivers State, for another operator.
The decision followed the Federal Government's inability to broker truce between the oil giant and Ogoni, the host community.
In Cape Town, South Africa, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua disclosed yesterday that by the end of this year, Shell would divest all its operations in the Ogoni for a new firm to come in.
The President's disclosure came as Total said it was assessing its presence in the Niger Delta region.
Yar'Adua also said that agreements have been reached on the compensation to be paid by Shell for the environmental degradation arising from the spillage of crude oil as a result of its operations in the area.
