Apparently, there's a Carnevale in Venice. Starting tomorrow. We've seen some costumes already and these guys take their Carnevale very seriously.

Oooh, yes indeed there is! My hairdresser and his boyfriend have been a couple of times, and they came back with the most incredible photos. The costumes were out of this world.

*chuckle* Obviously, you never played in a school band or orchestra, or you'd have known this.

("The Carnival of Venice" - an Italian folk melody set in numerous arrangements since the 1800s - is one of those ubiquitous school band competition pieces, designed to show off a brass soloist's tongue skills - it's practically a rite of passage.

And you've probably heard it, even if you don't know the name - it's been used as background music for countless cartoons and movies) Oh, look, here's an .mp3 version (http://www.dwerden.com/SoundFiles/carnival_venice.mp3) of the uber-fancy Herbert Clarke arrangement, played on a euphonium. Amid the fancy trills and arpeggios you can probably make out the basic theme....)

They don't take it quite as seriously as they used to, though. A few centuries ago, the custom was to start Carnevale the day after Christmas, and there would be parties every night for a couple of months.
