Some flavour of "Toronto Pride" has been in existence since 1970. The first "Gay Day" picnic was a success, spawning a second in 1971 and a third in 1972. By 1973, the organizers were asking city hall to officially recognize Toronto Pride.

City Hall finally recognized Pride Week in 1991. Eighteen years later. Toronto Pride is the third largest pride celebration in North America, and the largest tourist event in Toronto.

But now the city is threatening pride with cutting funding. Me, I say don't take the money. We're quite capable of holding a pride without the city's helping hand.
