Thought for the Day
Sep. 10th, 2006 09:36 amUnfortunately the progressive Haitian community has not received much support in their struggle. Haiti still seems off the radar for most Canadians. Many are willing to march in the streets to criticize the U.S. over Iraq but have been unwilling to denounce our own government's substantial role in deposing the elected president of the hemisphere's poorest country. Knowledge about the situation in Haiti, particularly the significance of Canada's role, continues to be minimal.
But, the word is spreading. [...] It remains true, however, that there is a deeper reluctance to address the problem of Canadian "exceptionalism," which finds it easier to criticize the U.S. than to turn that criticism towards our country.
