This Week Has Seven Bullet Points
Apr. 2nd, 2006 08:59 pm- George W. Bush agrees to help resolve the U.S.-Canada softwood lumber dispute. This, after yet another ruling from a NAFTA board. Canadians still trying to determine if this is reciprocity for electing a Conservative government. Harper test drives new put downs and tells journalists he hopes for "more mature" Canada-US relations.
- James Loney returns to Canada. Stories emerge about how organizations worked to keep Loney's sexual orientation out of the news for fear that he'd be killed by his abductors.
- Canadian soldier killed in Khandahar fighting Taliban insurgents.
- Ralph Klein. Not quite the hero he thought he was. Suggests that he might bow out in 18 months. Is surprised when his party responds, "Can't you make it a bit sooner?"
- Harper tells us that US border ID cards are good for the Canadian economy. Manages to plant the phrase "bow to the inevitability" of a new national-identity card for cross-border travel.
- Guy blows himself up in Tim Hortons washroom in Yorkville (downtown Toronto). Police cautious to describe event as a "fire", and want people to think "high-profile suicide", not "terrorist attack". One woman said that the "fire" felt like a sudden shock through the store.
- Besides, (alleged) terrorists aren't found in Yorkville. That's too downtown. Instead, they're hanging out in Newmarket.
