André Boisclair has won the Parti Québécois leadership race. Unless things turn around in a hurry for the Quebec Liberals, he's likely to be the next premier of Quebec, too.

Boisclair is an openly gay man, and his admission that he once used cocaine was widely-reported. Some reporters speculated that his openness about such things made him seem honest and down-to-earth, compared to politicians who recite canned speeches and trot out talking points. Boisclair won the leadership on the first ballot.

Heard on the CBC tonight: "Since Confederation, there have been only five federal elections held in the months of December, January or February." Last winter election was the one that defeated Joe Clark.

All the rhetoric points to a non-confidence vote on the 28th.
