From the Toronto Star:
Since this is a television column, I had planned to review The Complex: Malibu, a new "reality" show that premiered this week and continues tonight (Fox, 8 p.m.).
The premise is simple: Eight couples compete to remodel, renovate, and redecorate a decrepit apartment building in southern California. The couple that does the best job wins a cash prize based on profits from a public auction.
Yes, it's needlessly confusing.
The show features screaming, scheming, backstabbing, and internecine warfare. In this sense, The Complex: Malibu is almost identical to the U.S. election, which has morphed into the ultimate "reality" show.
The Republicans and Democrats are like these makeover couples: Everybody is trying to win by covering up the ugly parts, building something superficial and demonizing the competition.
